Howard Kennedy

Howard’s Bio Howard has written rhyming poetry since he was about five. His childhood was spent in Far North Queensland His poetry, for most of his life, was deeply personal and rarely shared until he moved to South-East Queensland. He first shared some of his poems in the Ipswich Poetry Feast before moving to Bribie Island. From there he published his first children’s book, “Mr Leaf’s Dream” and found poetry and writing groups including Bribie Island Poets, North Pine Bush Poets, Poets by the Bay, and Queensland Poetry Writers Group. While his writing held its own, he soon discovered that, he could also recite and in 2022 was crowned the NPBP Poet of the Year. He usually writes as W.H. Kennedy and performs as Howard Kennedy. 2024 his poem was longlisted in the Cloncurry Poetry Prize. 2024 his performances at Boondooma Homestead elevated him from the novice category. 2025 he received commendations for his poem “We’ll Know This Country Yet” 2025 his poetry was presented at Poetry in Action at Bribie Island Community Art Centre. He has a backlog of poetry anthologies, songs, children’s books and a novel all of which he plans to publish. Follow him on face book W.H. Kennedy Poet and Traveller or Watch This Space!

Poetry Needs to be Heard

© W.H. Kennedy

When you write a poem, and you are satisfied with it.
It’s important! Free it from the page! Please don’t let it sit.
To cut the string, and to give it voice, letting it go free
will help to test its sinew strength as worthy poetry.

You will detect its rhythm, its meter as well as rhyme.
Discover if your imagery will stand the test of time.
First read it aloud to yourself till you are satisfied.
Then read it to an audience to spread it far and wide.

All of the feedback you receive will help you to improve.
It may take you months or years to find your poem’s groove.
But if you leave it on the page, as a silent read.
The passion of your poetry may never truly bleed.
