The Bellbirds Of Anzac Cove

Spacer 6

© Mick Martin

Do I hear the bell birds calling?
Tinging, tinging night time falling
Tortured mind, I halt in hearing
Slowly now my fog is clearing
Tinging, tinging still I’m hearing … tinging

Leaving trenches constant shelling
Cold and dark in fear compelling
Still I hear it, tinging, tinging
Oh I miss those bell birds singing

Sad, in hush for just a moment
gift of rest is my bestowment
Far from here my home is calling
Once again those birds enthralling … tinging

Through the mud the wounded bringing
Somethings wrong, my tears are stinging
Still I hear those bell birds tinging
Mother prays – a church bell ringing
She can hear the bell birds tinging

Life is leaving, peace is calling
Padre near his words are drawling
Fade to grey I know I’m falling
Do I hear my sister bawling?

Tinging, tinging, still I’m hearing … tinging

In the ranges spirits soaring
There my soul will be restoring
Hear the bell birds all imploring
From the mist I hear them calling

Tinging, tinging, now I’m hearing … bellbirds
